Tucked into a compact backyard in Sumner, this project proves you do not need a large section to create a premium outdoor living space. Wanting to make better use of an underutilised grass backyard, the homeowners transformed the area into a modern summer oasis inspired by their love of coastal living and the nearby beach lifestyle.
As the centrepiece of the project, the owners choose a Bermuda Executive swimming pool in a light colour we call ‘Bahamas’.
This 6m insulated fibreglass pool is carefully positioned to maximise both swimming space and entertaining flow within the narrow site. To maximise year-round enjoyment, the insulated pool was fitted with heating and swim jets, allowing the owners to comfortably swim, exercise, and relax regardless of the season.
Large French doors open directly onto the existing timber decking, creating seamless level access through to the new “white sand” paving tiles that frame the pool area and enhance the light, coastal feel of the space.
Every detail was designed to make the space feel open, clean, and functional.
Frameless glass pool fencing preserves sightlines across the backyard, while vertical kwila timber walls separate the outdoor shower from pool area, and a hidden pool cover keeps the pool area streamlined and practical for everyday use. Carefully selected landscaping softens the modern finishes and adds privacy, while outdoor furniture and heating complete the resort-style atmosphere perfect for entertaining family and friends.
The end result is a compact but highly functional outdoor retreat that feels perfectly at home in the coastal surroundings of Sumner — delivering the lifestyle benefits of a larger property without needing more land.
